Waukee School District spokeswoman Amy Varcoe told The Iowa Standard that none of the district’s staff participated or joined the student-led walkout on Wednesday. About 140 students walked out to protest the Protect Women’s Sports bill that recently passed the Iowa legislature and was signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
Varcoe did say that Vice Principal Gerald Heisterman and the school resource officer were present as student left campus to ensure student safety.
“They did not ‘join’ or participate in the walkout,” Varcoe said. “Safety was our top priority as they left our campus.”
Students were recorded as an unexcused absence if they participated.
