State Sen. Jim Carlin (R-Woodbury) plans on introducing a bill that he knows will be highly controversial during the 2020 legislative session. He’d like to introduce a bill that that would restrict or ban instruction related to gender identity in elementary schools.
“Children at that age are not going to understand the implications, they’re not going to have the discernment to really know and understand the issues attendant with that at all,” Carlin said. “Introducing that into very young children, I just don’t think is appropriate.”
Not only is that inappropriate, but he also said it gives no deference to the beliefs of the parents.
“With moral beliefs of the parents, there should be some boundaries,” Carlin said. “For a lot of people, their faith is their life. To have these things introduced to second, third, fourth and fifth-graders, it really gives no deference and recognizes no boundaries of parents in the upbringing of their children morally.”
Carlin also has a bill that would require public schools to have a plaque on the wall that states:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
“That’s a pretty good encapsulation of what America is supposed to be,” Carlin said. “If you put those words on a plaque and a kid walks by it and reads them, you hope some of that gets inside of them. While it’s not a complete encapsulation of America, those words are what inspired Abraham Lincoln to free the slaves.”
