There is an event page set up on Facebook promoting the idea of students and faculty at the University of Iowa call in sick on Sept. 2.

“After the first week of classes at the University of Iowa, there were 607 self-reported cases of COVID-19 on campus among students,” the page says. “If Iowa were a country, it would have the third-highest rate of infection per capita in the world. Despite this, the University of Iowa’s administration insists that it’s safe to remain open for in-person classes.”

The plan is for students and faculty to call in sick on Sept. 2 and to demand Iowa to move to 100 percent online instruction.

“This move, called a sickout, is designed to show U of Iowa that we refuse to participate in the needless, preventable infection of our colleagues, students, classmates, fellow workers and neighbors in Iowa City.”
