A statue of Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was is being removed by the Virginia Military Institute. Jackson was a Confederate general in the Civil War.
The statue stood at Virginia Military Institute for more than 100 years. The board voted to remove the statue in October.
The Virginia Military Institute is the oldest state-supported milliary university in America.
The statue is being relocated to the Virginia Museum of the Civil War and New Market Battlefield State Historical Park.
Removing the statue will cost $209,000, according to CBS News.
VMI’s Board of Visitors committed to appointing a “permanent diversity officer, creating a permanent diversity and inclusion committee on the Board of Visitors, creating diversity initiatives to include a focus on gender’ and adopting new hiring practices and a diversity hiring plan,” according to the CBS report.
