Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon engaged in an exchange with CNN host Poppy Harlow about gun rights.

One can imagine how that went.

Harlow asked Bacon if there is need for another assault weapons ban.

“I surely would want to ban M-16s, but that’s not what we’re talking about,” Bacon said. “Actual weapons of war are not being used.”

Harlow seemed convinced that AR-15s are weapons of war, but Bacon told her that is inaccurate and used to mislead many people.

“I’m asking you if you think an AR-15 is akin to a weapon of war or what was used here,” Harlow said.

Bacon said a weapon of war is an automatic weapon.

“It’s a machine gun — that’s what our army uses,” he said. “An AR-15 is not. It’s a rifle. By the way, the AR-15 is the most popular rifle in America.”

Harlow asked Bacon why Americans need AR-15s.

“You know, we’re a country of free people,” Bacon said. “You are allowed to have things you want. If it’s legal. And this is.”

Harlow continued asking why someone would own an AR-15.

“Poppy, should you be challenged on what you own and why,” Bacon asked. “It’s your right.”

Harlow said anyone owning an AR-15 should be asked since “so many people are dying.”
