Parents of children who attend Southview Middle School in Ankeny received a message last week detailing guidance for the cold and flu season. According to the message from a person called Rachel Borich, the school nurse, students who test positive for COVID must isolate at home from day 0-5 and may return after five days as long as:
*They are fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medications;
*Their symptoms are improving
*They wear a mask for days 6-10 when they return to school.
The mask is allowed to be removed if they test negative twice (at least 48 hours apart) before day 10.
Iowa lawmakers passed a law to prohibit schools from requiring masks previously.
The school, though, said they are following guidance from the Polk County Health Department.
