Diana Furchtgott-Roth, Director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment and the Herbert and Joyce Morgan Fellow in Energy and Environmental Policy, criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s electric vehicle mandate.

“Vice President Harris and President Biden have imposed a mandate through the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation that requires 70% of all new passenger cars in America to be battery-powered electric or plug-in hybrid by 2032. The mandate also specifies that 25% of all heavy trucks sold must be electric.

“This Biden-Harris EV mandate imposes high costs, proves impractical, and burdens automakers, small businesses, farmers, and families. It increases America’s dependence on China, which produces 80% of EV batteries, as a recent Heritage report details. Mandating electric heavy trucks harms businesses and consumers, as battery-powered freight cannot match the performance of fossil fuel-powered freight. Finally, the penalties for non-compliance are un-American and impose massive financial burdens.”
