On Thursday, Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) and Representative Mary Miller (IL-15) led a group of 22 Republican lawmakers in calling on Speaker Mike Johnson to oppose any addition of the female draft in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024 (NDAA).

The Representatives wrote in a letter, “Forcing young women to register for the selective service is an affront to our nation’s values and does not enhance military readiness – the only metric by which Congress should measure an NDAA. This is yet another blatant attempt to advance a divisive agenda that seeks to eliminate all distinctions between males and females.”

This letter follows the Senate Armed Service Committee passing an NDAA that includes a provision that requires women to register with the Selective Service.

“We call on you [Speaker Johnson] to unequivocally oppose any effort to draft our daughters. This radical proposal has been defeated in the past and must be defeated once again. Therefore, we urge you and Chairman Mike Rogers to prevent any provision requiring women to register for selective service from being included in the final FY 2025 NDAA, or any NDAA thereafter,” the group of lawmakers said.

Other Republicans that signed the letter include Representatives Bob Good (VA-05), Josh Brecheen (OK-02), Tom Tiffany(WI-07), Harriet M. Hageman (WY), Paul Gosar (AZ-09), Bill Posey (), Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Ralph Norman (SC-05), Brian Babin (TX-36), Eric Burlison (MO-07), Barry Moore (AL-02), Warren Davidson (OH-08), Michael Cloud (TX-27), Alex Mooney (WV-02), Andy Ogles (TN-05), Diana Harshbarger (TN-01), Mark Green (TN-07), Andrew Clyde (GA-09), Ben Cline (VA-06), Lauren Boebert (CO-03), Robert Aderholt (AL-04), and Keith Self (TX-03).
