Ames Community Schools will be participating in the Black Lives Matter week of education Feb. 1-5.
There’s a document called “Black Lives Matter Guiding Principles” that is “Kid-friendly.”
Kids are told that when they hurt somebody, they cannot just say “Sorry” and walk away. This is the principle of “restorative justice.”
It’s “so important” that we have lots of different kinds of people in our community and that everyone feels safe. This is the principle of “diversity.”
We should be thinking about “all the different people all over the world, and thinking about the ways to keep things fair everywhere.” This is the principle of “Globalism.”
And, of course, “everybody has the right to choose their own gender by listening to their own heart and mind. Everyone gets to choose if they are a girl or a boy or both or neither or something else, and no one else gets to choose for them.” This is the principle of “transgender affirming.”
“Everybody has the right to choose who they love and the kind of family they want by listening to their own heart and mind.” This is the principle of “queer affirming.”
If you are wondering, this document is listed under early childhood/elementary resources.
