The CDC has announced it will change how it reports breakthrough cases of COVID-19. A breakthrough case is when someone who is fully vaccinated contracts COVID-19 anyway.

According to the CDC, more than 95 million Americans had been fully vaccinated as of April 26. The CDC also says there is “some evidence” that vaccination “may make illness less severe.”

As of April 26, there have been 9,245 breakthrough cases of COVID-19. Of those, 835 resulted in hospitalizations and 132 resulted in death.

However, the CDC is only going to report patients who are hospitalized or die to “help maximize the quality of the data collected on cases of greatest clinical and public health importance.”

That change will begin on May 14. Because of this transition, the CDC will not provide an updated number on May 7.
