An Iowa House forum between primary opponents revealed stark differences in District 92. The race is between Heather Hora and Jaron Rosien.
Rosien recently registered as a Republican at the beginning of this year. He had participated in the 2020 Democrat caucus.
Hora, on the other hand, was recently endorsed by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
“I think (Reynolds) is one of the greatest leaders of all time,” Hora said. “I am humbled by her endorsement. I look forward to working with her, to enact a pro-taxpayer, pro-family agenda.”
Rosien, meanwhile, said the endorsement from Reynolds is a “perfect example” why he should receive votes.
“I see it (as) less of an endorsement, and more like a pair of golden handcuffs…Gov. Reynolds desperately wants to force the voucher program on citizens in Iowa that she is taken to meddling in these primary elections,” he said, according to the Southeast Iowa Union. “It is unprecedented and I think it is dangerous.”
More concerning than helping Iowa kids with a way out of a public education system that isn’t working for them is not being willing to defend Iowa kids before they’re born.
On abortion, Rosien failed to commit to “an overly strict” state abortion policy should Roe v. Wade be overturned.
“I would prefer that there not be abortion. I want to protect all life, life of mothers included…in North America, 19.7 out of every 1,000 pregnancies are ectopic,” he said. “That is the leading cause for maternal morbidity in the first trimester. I am not a mother, I am not pregnant, but I don’t think that we should sentence a mother to death by legislating with an iron fist.”
That is concerning to hear from a Republican running for House in Iowa. The Iowa House already killed the Protect Life Amendment once. Rosien has not responded to The Iowa Standard’s survey asking if he supports the amendment.
Hora, on the other hand, said she would support the Heartbeat Bill and would support life.
Hora also pledged to stand by the Republican Party of Iowa’s conservative platform.
Rosien, who is mayor of Washington, Iowa and resides there with his husband, called himself a “future-minded Republican, a big-picture Republican,” who doesn’t “fit perfectly within the party.”
Rosien has solicited the support of both Independents and Democrats, encouraging them to crossover and vote in the Republican Party primary.
