After having classes on Good Friday and even holding sporting events the same evening, the Des Moines Public School District is closed today (Wednesday, April 10) in honor of Eid al-Fitr.
The district sent a reminder to families in the district on Tuesday.
“In honor of Eid al-Fitr, no classes will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10, in Des Moines Public Schools,” the message from a person called Jessica Gogerty said. “Eid al-Fitr is an Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the month when devout Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset. Ramadan is at time of increased worship, charity and good deeds.”
While Eid al-Fitr is indeed specifically mentioned on the district calendar, there is no mention of “Thanksgiving” or “Christmas.” There was no school Nov. 22-24 due to the “holiday break.” And there was no school Dec. 22-31 due to “winter break.”
According to We Are Iowa, Waukee South Middle School provided rooms to allow students to pray during designated times in the day for Ramadan. Waukee High School students hosted a Ramadan celebration last month to educate people about Ramadan.

Why not? Even though this country was not founded by Muslims, and that culture had nothing to do with our humble beginnings, there is a day to honor them. That would be November 10, the Marine Corps birthday. Yes, Islam did contribute to the Marine Corps and gave us our Marine Hymn. The Islamic contribution was the Barbary Pirates in which President Jefferson ordered the Marines to kill. But with our screwed up misled government Iowa children are slowly assimilating into an Islamic caliphate. The cult of Muhammad will use our 1st Amendment freedom of religion, and once a greater percentage align with Sharia law, that freedom will come to an abrupt end. No more freedom of religion. Might as well practice the Shahada: There is no god but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
