The Iowa House Republicans are claiming on social media that they banned COVID vaccine passports with House File 889. That is not true.

Private businesses can still utilize COVID vaccine passports — but they will not be eligible for state grants.

Health care facilities can still utilize COVID vaccine passports — without consequence as they were exempted from the bill.

Government entities, however, ARE banned from utilizing COVID vaccine passports.

The bill prevents the state or any political subdivision of the state from including on an identification card information regarding whether the holder has received a vaccination for COVID-19.

So, private businesses and health care factilities would have to create their own method and system of using vaccine passports.

But the passports are not banned in Iowa if used by private businesses or health care facilities.
