It appears the Republican-controlled Iowa legislature delivered one more win for the LGBTQ lobby on Friday night. GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force (otherwise known as “Iowa Safe Schools”) put out an urgent alert Friday encouraging people to contact legislators to defeat amendment H-8380 to Senate File 2430.

The amendment, according to GLBT Youth In Iowa Schools Task Force, would have prevented transgender Iowans from changing their birth certificate as is allowed under current law.

According to the group, the amendment would redefine sex as being strictly assigned at birth.

“The impact of this legislation on trans Iowans will be harsh,” the group said. “Legislators shouldn’t hold veterans hostage for culture wars.”

Republican State Rep. Phil Thompson managed the bill and filed the amendment. He withdrew the amendment during the debate.

The Iowa legislature failed to remove gender identity from the civil rights code this session, which would have provided actual protections based on sex in the civil rights code. It also failed to pass a Woman’s Bill of Rights, which would have defined the words woman, man, female and male.
