HEARING PREVIEW: Ames school board member says the board isn’t to blame for BLM at School – dictating curriculum is sole area of control of superintendent

***With a House Government Oversight Committee hearing coming up on Tuesday regarding the Black Lives Matter At School Week of Action hosted by the Ames district, we wanted to refresh everyone on what happened.***

According to Monic Behnken, a member of the Ames District school board, the Black Lives Matter at School curriculum is not a board initiative.

Behnken said the dictating of curriculum is the “sole area of control” of Jenny Risner, the superintendent.

“The BLM at School curriculum was asked for by the principals and teachers, so the board is not forcing anything on them,” Behnken said. “As the people who spend the most time with our students, they saw a need for this curriculum in our schools and took steps to bring it to our district as a team.”
