Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (R-IA-02) released the following statement after the House passed the Equal Representation Act. This bill requires the decennial census to include a citizenship question, and excludes noncitizens from the population on which the apportionment of U.S. House Representatives and electors for each state is based. Hinson is a cosponsor of this legislation.

The bill would only allow U.S. citizens to count toward determining the number of congressional seats, which also impacts Electoral College votes.

“Reinstating the citizenship question on the decennial census will ensure sanctuary states like California and New York are not rewarded for allowing illegal immigrants into their communities. This legislation will guarantee that only American citizens – not illegal immigrants – are considered for federal representation, Electoral College votes, and funding opportunities.” – Congresswoman Ashley Hinson
