Congressman Kevin McCarthy has failed 11 times to obtain the necessary number of votes to be Speaker of the House. But the moderate establishment Republican is showing no signs of throwing in the towel.
And, according to KCCI, neither are Iowa’s Republican representatives in the United States House of Representatives, despite the fact 53 percent of Republican voters either oppose McCarthy becoming Speaker or are “undecided.”
Third District Congressman-elect Zach Nunn told KCCI he is “happy” to say McCarthy will be a “good, pragmatic leader.” Nunn predicted McCarthy would be able to work with people “all across the caucus and work with people across the aisle.”
First District Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks said people are frustrated, but the situation is not unprecedented.
“I think through this process, we’re going to be stronger,” she told KCCI. “We’re going to be better.”
Fourth District Congressperson Randy Feenstra said delaying is only going to help Democrats obstruct Republican efforts to “rein in wasteful spending, balance the budget and fix our broken economy.”
Second District Congresswoman Ashley Hinson called for Republicans to unify behind McCarthy.
McCarthy, who played a significant role in ousting conservative Congressman Steve King, has failed to win over congressional conservatives who are blocking his ascent to Speaker.
