House File 2128, a bill that requires private businesses to sell a certain product, was signed into law on Tuesday. Supporters of the law believe it will increase consumer access to higher biofuel blends like E15 and B20 while also providing fuel retailers additional help to upgrade fueling infrastructure.
Gas stations and other fuel retailers will be required to sell E15 beginning in 2026, though there are some exemptions for stations with older equipment as well as those who sell less than 300,000 gallons of gas each year. Such stations are eligible to apply for waivers.
Any gas stations built or upgraded beginning in 2023 have to be compatible with E85, or gas with 85 percent ethanol, as well as B20. In addition, tax credits for fuel with higher blends of ethanol and biodiesel are included in the law while tax credits for lower blends are phased out.
“I’ve never been prouder than I am today to be the Governor of the number one ethanol and biodiesel-producing state in the country,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said about the signing. “Iowa’s biofuel production powers our economy and fuels the world, and this historic bill sets the stage for the single largest expansion of biofuels in our state’s history. We’re sending a message that can’t be ignored: America’s energy is growing right here in Iowa’s fields.”
