When Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in 2022, many of us thought that now we will get something done. Knowing that the Democrats still controlled the Senate, we knew that we were limited in what we could get passed and signed by President Biden. At least, we thought, we can begin to put some controls on the out-of-control spending that was rampaging through Congress.

Well, surprise! The slim majority that the Republicans hold in the House hasn’t resulted in any significant change. Why? The Republican Party in the US House of Representatives is a “House Divided.” When Speaker Kevin McCarthy couldn’t seem to support any kind of spending restraint, he was removed in what was described as a “coup.”

After quite a bit of wrangling, Mike Johnson (LA-04) was chosen to be the new speaker. With promises of fiscal restraint and closing the southern border, we were encouraged that this was going to be a positive change. We were finally going to see something done about the profligate spending. We were going to get some results.

Alas, it was not to be! When faced with the dreaded “government shutdown,” Speaker Johnson folded like a cheap lawn chair. Continuing resolution follows continuing resolution and nothing changes. It is “business as usual.”

Now there appears to be the threat of “civil war” between conservatives in the Freedom Caucus and the rest of the Republican representatives. There is a move afoot to remove Johnson from the Speaker’s chair. All the while the Democrats smile gleefully. Everything on the Left’s wish list keeps getting pushed through and Republican control is dwindling.

As if it wasn’t bad enough to have a Congress divided between a Republican House and a Democrat Senate; if it wasn’t bad enough to have a House of Representatives divided almost down the middle between Republicans and Democrats; now we have the Republican majority divided! When we should be looking at expanding Republican control of the House and taking back control of the Senate in November, we very well may be looking at losing both.
