In New York state where the death penalty was abolished in 2007, the Democratic-majority legislature passed, and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed, the so-called “Reproductive Health Act,” which authorizes the murder of unborn babies up to the point of birth.

The New York Senate and Assembly each passed the expansive abortion bill on Tuesday, January 22, the date which marks 46 years since the Supreme Court’s horrendous abortion opinion in Roe v. Wade. Governor Andrew Cuomo immediately signed the “Reproductive Health Act” and then celebrated by lighting the One World Trade Center’s 408-foot spire, the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Kosciuszko Bridge, and the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany in pink. Ironically, the One World Trade Center was built as a monument to the 3,000 people who died on 9/11.

Sitting with Cuomo as he signed the bill was Sarah Ragle Weddington, the lawyer who represented Jane Roe in Roe v. Wade.  Roe, whose real name was Norma McCorvey, later said Weddington encouraged her to lie about being raped in order to convince the Supreme Court to authorize abortion. Governor Cuomo thanked Weddington for her work in ensuring legalized abortion (i.e., killing innocent children in the womb). Cuomo and the legislators who passed this despicable bill celebrated the killing of these precious children.

After the 2004 New York Court of Appeals decision in People v. LaValle, which found that the capital punishment statute violated the state’s constitution, New York has not practiced the death penalty. It was formally abolished in 2007, with the last remaining death sentences converted to life imprisonment. However, lethal injections and tortuous dismemberment can now be given to and inflicted upon preborn children in New York.

“I am sickened by the scene of adults celebrating the killing of helpless children,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. “A child can be tortured and killed seconds before it is born. Instead of lighting up New York with pink, it should have been red for the shedding of innocent blood. I pray that this death agenda will stop soon. Each human life is sacred. The right to life is the right of all rights, and that inalienable right includes the unborn,” said Staver.
