I appreciate other media outlets picking up the story on Louis Fountain. For a long time the media has ignored stories that make liberals look bad in the local media — Des Moines superintendent Ahart is exhibit A and exhibit B.
But when KCCI, the Des Moines Register and We Are Iowa all picked up on the Louis Fountain story, I thought things were getting better.
Here was KCCI’s story.
Here was the Des Moines Register’s story.
Here was We Are Iowa’s story.
Fountain made some political posts that were in poor taste, and without the description of his job likely seem minimally important. But the worst post — the one about Herschel Walker not wanting to be black combined with liking comments that refer to black conservatives as “coons” is nowhere to be found.
Not on KCCI. Not on the Des Moines Register. Not at We Are Iowa.
How does that happen? How is it the post goes 0-for-3?
If roles were reversed, a black conservative tweeted about Barack Obama not wanting to be black, would media ignore it?
I think we know that answer.
How on Earth does this happen? Why does it happen?
Look, The Iowa Standard is just one journalism outlet. And it admittedly has very different views from most Des Moines area media outlets.
But different views doesn’t change facts.
The fact is that Fountain said Herschel Walker doesn’t want to be black and liked two comments referring to black conservatives as “coons.”
The fact that none of the Des Moines media outlets that reported on this incident included those facts shows they aren’t overly interested in facts.
And, if they’re interested in those stories about the Des Moines superintendent and his wife, we still have those screenshots as well.
Our role as journalists is to inform the public on what is happening. It isn’t to inform the public on what we want the public to know.
