An “ordained minister” called Carol Teare spoke in support of Waterloo’s ban on counseling for confused kids as it relates to their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Teare called such counseling “inhumane.”

“Let’s be very clear, conversion therapy is not therapeutic,” she said. “It does not heal or help. It doesn’t help any individuals who have a right to be who they were created to be.”

Teare said there are “well-attested” consequences for “misguided individuals attempt to pray the gay away.”

“Your job as a city council is to protect all citizens,” she said. “To that end, I am grateful as I said for your serious consideration of this proposal. Do not let fear, hatred or judgment win this day. To pass this ban would give hope at a time that it has never been more needed.”

Teare said those using their faith and Scripture to defend such counseling, have no right to harm someone else because of their interpretation.
