A New Mexico TV station actually aired this segment during a newscast on pronouns in the workplace. You can watch it below.
The conversation was centered around diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and how to approach conversations around preferred pronouns.
The “expert” being interviewed said to make sure preferred pronouns are respected and honored.
When asked if it is appropriate to ask someone for their preferred pronouns, she said no.
“If they haven’t fully made the decision on what pronoun they would like to use, let them come around to that decision and then ask. If they haven’t asked yet, it’s not safe to assume. We don’t want to make any assumptions,” she said.
This will require more patience the individuals said.
If using a pronoun feels “unnatural,” she urged individuals to use first names.
She also said people will refuse to use preferred pronouns.
“If you don’t agree, still just use their first name. This isn’t something that would rise to the occasion of getting written up if you refuse to use it, but this could rise to the occasion of bullying,” she said.
