With the countless stories of Iowa students being asked for their preferred pronouns and names at the beginning of the school year, we reached out to the Iowa Department of Education to find out what guidance, if any, the department offers local school districts.
It does not appear the Department of Education offers any guidance. Instead, school districts set “local policies” regarding gender pronouns provided they align with the provisions outlined in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and they do not violate Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, according to the Iowa Department of Education Communications Director Heather Doe.
“FERPA provides parents with the right to access their child’s educational records,” Doe added. “This means, a parent has the right to review their child’s educational records, including any record of the child’s gender identity, upon request.”
