This week, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) joined members of the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) to launch a new Inflation Working Group to help advance policy solutions that will lower costs for American families, free up supply chains, and fight short- and long-term inflationary pressures.

The Inflation Working Group will focus on building on the economic recovery already underway, thanks in part to emergency relief packages passed by Congress and approved by President Biden like the American Rescue Plan. Legislation they will focus on getting signed into law includes important measures like those on Axne’s Supply Chain Solutions Agenda signed into law.

“The American economy is recovering in a strong way, but I know that economic challenges from rising prices and continuing uncertainty are still on the minds of all Iowa families,” said Rep. Axne. “I am proud to help launch this critical group of lawmakers who will be laser-focused on combating inflation, strengthening American industries, lowering prices for our workers and their families, and building a stronger and more resilient economy in the years and decades to come.”

Axne and the Inflation Working Group met for the first time this Wednesday with Dr. Wendy Edelberg, former Chief Economist for the Congressional Budget Office, and Dr. Jason Furman, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama to discuss root causes of price increases and legislative proposals that would deliver relief to American families.

Earlier this month, Rep. Axne and the entire New Democrat Coalition voted unanimously to dvance the America COMPETES Act, landmark economic legislation aimed at lowering prices, solving supply chain disruptions, boosting American manufacturing, and creating new opportunities for Iowans.

“The United States is experiencing a Biden Boom. Our economic recovery has been strong and widespread with growth in several sectors, but like the rest of the world, many Americans are facing rising costs driven by the pandemic,” said NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “From feeding their families to heating their homes, New Dems have heard how inflation is impacting our constituents’ daily lives. Our members are listening and have established the Inflation Working Group to advance policies that will address these challenges and lower costs for Americans. I thank Rep. Axne for her leadership on this pressing issue.”

“Under the Biden administration, our economy has recovered in terms of jobs and growth. Now, Americans are feelings effects of inflation, and New Dems want to make sure that we are doing everything we can in Congress to help,” said NDC Vice Chair for Policy Scott Peters (CA-52). “This new working group – the first of its kind within the New Democrat Coalition—will push for solutions that target the sources of inflation, strengthen supply chains, and ease escalating prices. Our coalition is taking charge to ensure our constituents can take full advantage of our robust economy.”

Rep. Axne also serves as the Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s Rural Reinvestment Task Force.

The New Democrat Coalition is comprised of 95 forward-thinking Democrats who are committed to pro-economic growth, pro-innovation, and fiscally responsible policies.
