Republican State Rep. Brent Siegrist, who is an assistant majority leader for the GOP in the Iowa House, told attendees at his legislative coffee that there is a lot of bipartisan opposition for the school choice bill in the Iowa House.

According to a tweet from Andrew Batt, Siegrist said the language in the bill leads to a full-blown voucher system. Siegrist said the bill can’t pass the House and “it’s not even close.”

Batt reported that Siegrist said he is opposed to school choice and cited his background as former House Speaker, leader of an Iowa education AEA and parent who sent his own kids to Council Bluffs St. Albert — a private school.

The Republican Party platform makes it clear — Republicans support school choice.

1. We believe that parents are responsible for their children, and we support the rights of parents to be the ultimate authority for the discipline, protection, and education of their children.
2. We believe money should follow the child in education – whether that child attends public, private, parochial or home school- to assist parents financially in educating their children using the option best suited to their family’s educational needs. We call on the General Assembly to provide for tuition vouchers, tax deductions, or tax credits to permit parents’ choice in educating their children- without government intervention in the school curriculum.
