Iowans across the state love their local high school sports team, but especially in small communities. Few things bring a community as much pride as their local school qualifying for the state tournament.
For those not able to make the trek to Des Moines for the state tournament, they have historically been able to watch the event on statewide Iowa PBS. But that ability may soon be going away. A bill proposed by the Majority Party just passed the first hurdle in the legislative process and could result in viewing the sporting event on public television nearly impossible.
This means grandparents who cannot make the trip will not be able to watch their granddaughter play in the state volleyball or basketball tournament, or the neighbor who has watched the girl next door grow up may now not have access to watch her play in the state softball tournament.
The bill, HSB 579 will now head to full committee, before heading to the floor of the Iowa House.
