Iowa Senate Republicans passed a proposed constitutional amendment on Thursday afternoon. The proposed amendment would need to pass both the House and the Senate in two separate general assemblies. In order to be ratified, it must be approved in a vote by the People of Iowa.
Democrats were united in their opposition to giving Iowans a voice on the matter. One of the odd things said came from Sen. Claire Celsi.
“A constitutional amendment is the most extreme action that can be taken in a Democratic political body. The Republicans are sick of the courts standing up for Iowans’ rights, they want to make sure they have the final say.”
But, as explained above, Republicans will not have the final say. Nor will Democrats. Nor will the courts.
Iowa voters will, if the proposed amendment is passed again in the next General Assembly.
It is hard to believe that the most extreme action that could take place in a Democratic political body is the idea of letting the voters decide on an issue.
