State Sen. Dan Dawson made waves in 2016 when he beat the Democrat’s Senate Majority Leader, Mike Gronstal. And he’s rewarded his district with hard work and a tireless commitment to what matters most.

Dawson has been part of the Republican-controlled Iowa Senate that has created one of the most pro-business economies in Hawkeye State history. He’s been endorsed by NFIB and received their “Guardian of Small Business” award.

More than that, at a time when standing for law and order is so pivotal, Dawson’s support for law enforcement is part of who he is. His father served on the Council Bluffs PD. Dawson himself is a DCI agent.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include one of my favorite moments from Sen. Dawson during his time in the legislature.

These comments came during debate on Senate File 2348 (felon voter sentence discharge). Dawson shredded the Des Moines Register editorial board on the floor of the Iowa Senate.

“Instead, what’s the Des Moines Register editorial board do? They go slash and burn politics which is what they’re best at,” Dawson said. “So instead of talking about the merits of the bill, they want to talk about the wrong-headed, ancient Greek philosophy and how the majority party wants to make voting as hard as possible. Even though the very substance of what we’re trying to deal with is to try to create some automatic pathway for voter restitution.

“You know how many times they mentioned victims in this whole process. Once. And that was when they had to spell out the term victim restitution to try to waylay across that. It amazes me the paper of record of Iowa cannot discuss a victim in this entire process.”

He went on to rip up the editorial and threw it in the trash while calling it “garbage.”

Dawson has demonstrated exactly what he promised to deliver in 2016. He deserves a second term in the Iowa Senate and should be re-elected.
