U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), ranking member of the Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight, this week joined all of his Senate Finance Committee Republican colleagues in introducing a bill led by Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) that would prevent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from using any of the $80 billion of new funding to the agency for audits on American workers or small business owners who earn less than $400,000 per year.

“While the Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spending spree gave the IRS an unprecedented amount of taxpayer dollars to increase audits on working Americans, it did nothing to assure middle-income workers and small business owners that the agency won’t be targeting them,” said Thune. “If Democrats are serious about protecting middle-income Americans from a supersized IRS, then it’s time to pass this critical legislation that would provide real protections to those workers who support the backbone of our economy.”
