The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) applauds Governor Larry Rhoden (R–SD) for signing his first bill as South Dakota’s 34th Governor, officially banning sanctuary cities statewide. Sanctuary city policies undermine public safety by shielding criminals and creating safe spaces for illegal activities. By taking this decisive action, Governor Rhoden creates uniformity across the state and ensures that law enforcement can work seamlessly with federal partners to hold criminals accountable and, most importantly, keep South Dakotans safe.
“Governor Rhoden delivered a massive win for the rule of law and the safety of South Dakota families,” said Clay Rhodes, State Government Affairs Director at FGA. “By banning sanctuary cities, lawmakers guaranteed that no jurisdiction in the state can undermine or selectively ignore immigration law. This will lock in uniform protections across South Dakota, preventing local governments from jeopardizing public safety.”
“Governor Rhoden is showing the country what true leadership looks like: common sense, accountability, and putting citizens ahead of politics,” Rhodes added. “The state will be stronger and her citizens safer because of this new law.”
