On Thursday, Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) released a pledge to the constituents of Texas’ 21st district, promising to fight to freeze federal spending, restore a government that works for the American people, and pass an agenda to stand up for America.
“I pledge to the 21st Congressional District of Texas to Stand Up for America by fighting to restore common sense and responsible spending, freedom through government based upon the consent of the governed not big corporate crony interests, and a sovereign nation secure from both the tyranny of the authoritarian state and the vulnerability created by open borders and a woke, over-extended military,” Rep. Roy’s pledge reads.
The five-page pledge outlines the path forward for Republicans in preparation for the next Congress, the first step of which is freezing federal spending at current levels. Next, Republicans should be prepared to expose the Biden Administration’s radical agenda and leverage the power of the purse to enact policies that restore a baseline of sanity and support hard-working Americans.
Finally, Republicans should pass their own agenda that supports hard-working Americans and expands the middle class, strengthens and secures our communities, restores the balance of power to the people, and defends our nation. To do so, we must pass policies that secure our southern border, ensure responsible spending, unleash American energy, establish healthcare freedom, end woke and divisive government, support our law enforcement, reduce the power of bureaucrats, restore a strong military, and protect our nation from dangerous foreign influence.
Rep. Roy had the following to say about his pledge:
I’ve been meeting with thousands of constituents over August all begging for the GOP to fight for them; and after outlining my three-step plan to “Stand Up for America,” they asked if they could have a copy.
This is it, and the most important piece of which is to use the power of the purse to demand immediate change.
In Federalist 58, James Madison called the power of the purse “the most complete and effectual weapon with which any constitution can arm the immediate representatives of the people.” Those words are still true, and more of my fellow Republicans ought to heed them.
