On Monday, The Iowa Standard’s daily poll question asked visitors at the Iowa State Fair if it was wrong for Tim Walz to misrepresent his military service. Walz has been the center of a few controversies revolving around how he represents his military service record.

Over the weekend, the Kamala Harris campaign admitted to CNN that Walz “misspoke” in 2018 when he claimed he carried weapons in war.

Walz has also been heavily criticized over his rank as well as retiring from his battalion around the time it found out it would be deployed to Iraq.

Of those who took our poll, 423 (93.4 percent) said it was wrong for Walz to misrepresent his military service. Just 30 people (6.6 percent) said it was not wrong for Walz to misrepresent his military service.

A number of fairgoers said it was unconscionable that Walz would misrepresent his service, with one individual saying the discussion among his veterans group is that Walz must be replaced on the Democrat ticket.

There were about a dozen others who disputed the fact that Walz misrepresented his military service. However, we showed them the story from CNN if they stuck around for discussion. Some who served with Walz have also been very public about Walz misinterpreting his military service. The Harris campaign even edited its website to represent Walz’s military service more accurately.
