Senate File 59 was filed by Democrat State Sen. Kevin Kinney. The bill would prohibit public and accredited nonpublic schools from scheduling school activities during presidential precinct caucuses.

Activities that would be prohibited from being scheduled during the presidential caucus include athletic events, concerts, performances, contests, practices, rehearsals or other similar events.

Two groups registered in support of the bill – GLBT Youth In Iowa Schools Task Force (Iowa Safe Schools) and the Iowa State Education Association (teacher’s union).

The Iowa Catholic Conference, Iowa Association of Christian Schools and League of Women Voters of Iowa registered against the legislation.
