David Young, candidate for Iowa’s Third Congressional District, released this statement on the inability of Congress to come to a deal on the next COVID-19 relief bill:

“The U.S. House of Representatives is broken, pure and simple. The President and the Republican-led Senate have been coming to the table and offering solutions for the coronavirus relief package.

“After three weeks, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have stuck to their partisan political wish list and talking points without being serious about negotiating a compromise package.  These aren’t the actions of leaders serious about finding a solution. These are the actions of partisan politicians playing politics with the lives and livelihoods of the American people. Because of Congress’s inaction, President Trump felt he had no choice but to issue executive orders to help bring relief to the American people.  The solution should have come about with Congress coming to the table and acting in good faith with a legislative package and regular order.

“And where is Cindy Axne in all of this? She claims to have the ear of Speaker Pelosi. If so, what is she telling her? She needs to be telling Speaker Pelosi to get serious about coming to the table and being serious about negotiating on the current coronavirus relief package.

“Democratic House leadership has sent its members home – meaning Cindy Axne is back in the Third District – instead of in Washington, D.C. working to find a solution and get a bill done. As Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Schumer wrote in a joint statement, ‘Lives are being lost, and time is of the essence.’ They’re right. It’s time for Cindy Axne and Nancy Pelosi to quit playing games and get to work.”
