Republican candidate for Attorney General, Brenna Bird is demanding that Tom Miller defend Iowa statutes in court like the 2018 Heartbeat Bill that protect the unborn following today’s Iowa Supreme Court ruling.
“I am calling on Tom Miller to reverse his stance on Iowa’s 2018 Heartbeat law in light of the State Supreme Court’s ruling,” said Brenna Bird. “Tom Miller needs to do his job, and his unwillingness to defend state laws protecting life shows that we need a new Attorney General. If elected, I will always fight to protect life.”
Today, the Iowa Supreme Court reversed it’s earlier 2018 decision in a 5-2 majority, effectively altering it’s previous view that the Iowa Constitution guarantees a right to an abortion.
Miller declined to defend the law in 2018 and disqualified himself from participating in the ruling since he could not “assert the state’s position because of his core beliefs.” He has not yet commented on today’s abortion ruling.
This isn’t the first time Miller put politics over his job. He refused to defend legal challenges to Iowa’s Chapter 20 Reforms passed by the legislature in 2017.
“Miller pushes politics ahead of the law. If elected to be your Attorney General, I’ll do the opposite,” Brenna Bird concluded.
