Senator Zach Nunn (R-Bondurant), who is also in the beginning stages of his Listening Tour in the Third Congressional District, was tasked with talking about the abortion neutrality amendment.

He started out by giving credit to fellow Sen. Amy Sinclair (R-Allerton) who he said is outstanding at talking about the life issue.

Nunn said the first thing the legislature does every morning is take a moment of prayer. But, he said, the most important prayer they have is the prayer brought out when pastors and members of the community come to the Capital and talk about what is important in their district.

“It’s you who are the ones who carry the voice with us,” he said. “Who are with us in our thoughts and with us in prayer. And so we thank you for that.”

Abortion, Nunn said, is one of the most pressing issues in the country. He pointed to Virginia and New York as states that show America is on a dark trail and a painful path.

“We started with a 20-week ban on abortion here in Iowa and that very next year, that same session, we led to a heartbeat bill passed in both the Senate, in the House and accepted by the Governor,” he said. “Now, as a father of four, I have to share with you something. We didn’t know what the gender of our first baby was going to be. And when that baby came out as a dad I was so excited. And the doctor hands it to me and I see this baby and I’m like ‘honey, we have a little boy.’ And my wife takes that baby and she says ‘honey, we have an umbilical cord. And we have a beautiful little girl.’

“But if you, like me, are at a point where life needs to be a priority — it’s right there, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — it does not happen without each one of you taking an active role in this. So while we can be proud of Iowa being first, it is a direct result of what you gave us and the support we needed. So thanks to each one of you.”
