Iowa House Democrats proposed a law that would significantly expand mail-in voting throughout the state.

House File 2385 requires county auditors to automatically mail absentee ballots to all registered voters 45 days before an election. There would be electronic confirmation regarding the receipt of returned ballots.

Voters currently must request an absentee ballot.

Democrat State Rep. Ken Croken sponsored the bill. Cosponsors include Democrat State Reps. Sean Bagniewski, Megan Srinivas, Elizabeth Wilson, Art Staed, Jerome Amos Jr., Mary Madison, Molly Buck, Timi Brown-Powers, Bob Kressig, Ross Wilburn, Dave Jacoby, Sue Cahill and Eric Gjerde.

The legislation is supported by Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers as well as the Iowa Chapter of Sierra Club.

VALOR Iowa and Iowa Minuteman Civil Defense Corps are registered against the bill.

  1. I knew a person (stranger) who got 2 ballots in the last election. One was for an illegal and one was for an English speaking person. (these are my opinions of why) The stranger mowing our yard told us and he was perplexed.
