United States Sen. Roger Marshall is encouraging the CDC to clarify new guidance published this month that encourages farm workers, especially those who work with dairy cattle, to receive this year’s flu shot.

While the guidance notes the seasonal flu shot doesn’t protect against infection with the bird flu (H5N1), Marshall said the CDC is using recent concerns regarding the bird flu to suggest the shot offers broader protection than it actually does.

“Examples like these are exactly why the American people have lost a lot of trust in our public health system,” Marshall said. “I hope the CDC immediately abandons its fear-mongering towards our farm workers and clarifies that the seasonal flu shot does not offer protection against the bird flu.”
