The Iowa Standard reached out to the Ankeny School District on Tuesday for an update regarding the district’s investigation into the “unauthorized” drag show that took place at Ankeny High School last week.
The Iowa Standard has heard from parents within the district that Jill Bjorkland, one of the teachers who attended the drag show, was out “sick” last week and missed the eighth-grade choir concern.
Parents in the district have also questioned a job opening at Ankeny High School for an English teacher. Mollie Blahunka, the sponsor for the Gay-Straight Alliance group that hosted the drag show, is an English teacher at the school.
According to another individual, teachers who participated in the drag show were placed on administrative leave.
The district, however, isn’t saying what is happening with the district.
“The Ankeny Community School District thoroughly investigates any report that raises a concern about the conduct of our students or staff members,” said communications director Samantha Aukes. “When fulfilling this duty, we respect the privacy of both those raising the concerns, as well as those whose actions are questioned. Beyond this, the Ankeny Community School District does not comment on the specifics of personnel matters.”
