Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the State Route 83 immigration checkpoint near Sonoita apprehended a Mexican national illegally present in the United States Sunday afternoon.

After arrest, record checks revealed 38-year-old Gustavo Gonzalez-Rodriguez was convicted by a California court in 2001 for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. He was subsequently required to register as a sex offender.

Gonzalez has an extensive criminal history that includes a 2016 felony conviction in South Carolina for assault and battery. He was sentenced to 10-years imprisonment for that crime.

A previously deported aggravated felon, Gonzalez will face federal prosecution for immigration violations.

All persons apprehended by the Border Patrol undergo criminal history checks using biometrics to ensure illegal aliens with criminal histories are positively identified.
