U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) introduced two bills related to congressional ethics as part of a concerted effort to improve accountability for members of Congress.
The first bill, H.R. 7484, would require members of Congress who are foreign nationals to file a statement of their status as a foreign national, and for other purposes.
- This bill would require newly elected Members to disclose dual citizenship within 90 days of being sworn in. If the Member fails to file the statement required, or if the Congressional Ethics Committee in the House or Senate determines the statement is defective, then the Committee may fine the Member not more than $2,500.
The second bill, H.R. 7485, would amend the STOCK Act of 2012 periodic transaction reporting requirement.
- This bill would increase transparency into Members’ stock trades by lowering the periodic transaction report timeline from 30 days and 45 days to 24 hours and 72 hours. This would allow the public to track stock trades in real-time and discourage Members from making hundreds of trades per day.
