Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed to The Iowa Standard that a person called Jose Andres Gomez Badillo, 28, is in fact in America unlawfully and is a citizen of Mexico. Badillo was charged with two counts of attempted murder, first-degree burglary, second-degree arson, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, obstructing prosecution and possession of drug paraphernalia on Oct. 14 in Hull.

Sources told The Iowa Standard that Badillo allegedly stabbed two individuals, including one person multiple times in the chest. Badillo allegedly set a fire in a house before the altercation.

ICE said that Badillo last entered the United States on an unknown date in 2020 at an unknown location. On Oct. 15, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) St. Paul filed an immigration detainer with the Sioux County Jail where Badillo is detained pending local charges.

Badillo has the following criminal history:

Dec. 14, 2016: Driving while license denied, suspended, canceled or revoked (dismissed by court)
Dec. 14, 2016: Possession of drug paraphernalia (dismissed by court)
Jan. 21, 2018: Failure to maintain control (guilty)
Nov. 7, 2018: Speeding (guilty)
Jan. 12, 2019: Operating while under the influence (guilty)
Jan. 18, 2019: Reckless driving (dismissed by court)
Jan. 18, 2019: Driving on wrong side of two way highway (dismissed by court)

Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst told The Iowa Standard that the open border represents a “continual threat” to daily safety.

“Our open southern border remains a continual threat to the daily safety of not only our citizens here in Sioux County, but communities like it all around our country,” Van Voorst said. “The solution should be simple and could have long ago easily been fixed, but remains broken. Simply put, it should not be a partisan issue and instead, should concern, sadden and upset every American citizen. A country without borders is not a country. I am not against immigration. I am an advocate of immigration done properly and through correct, legal channels.”
