Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has made “substantial progress” in the past 24 hours according to doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. According to the medical team, Hamlin is beginning to wake up and communicated in writing, asking who won Monday’s game.

Doctors said they told Hamlin he won the game of life.

Dr. Timothy Pritts said the plan is to allow Hamlin to “gradually wake up” while the rest of his body heals. Pritts said Hamlin was able to follow commands last night. According to Pritts, it appears his “neurological condition and function is intact,” though Hamlin remains “critically ill.”

Hamlin remains in the ICU.

“He still has significant progress that he needs to make,” Pritts said. “But this marks a really good turning point in his ongoing care.”

Doctors said the work-up is ongoing to find the cause for the incident.
