Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all state flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset Saturday, October 16, 2021 in honor of the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service in Washington D.C.
The service on Saturday honors peace officers killed in the line of duty and had been rescheduled from May this year due to COVID-19. The governor’s order is issued in conjunction with President Joe Biden’s proclamation to lower United State’s flags to half-staff.
“Across Iowa, the bravery and fearlessness of our law enforcement officers are constantly on display when they face the unknown of every traffic stop, night patrol, or undercover operation,” said Gov. Reynolds. “Their courageous service reminds us that behind every badge is a brave and generous heart. This day serves as another reminder of the heroic sacrifice of the men and women in blue as well as the family members who selflessly share their heroes with our grateful state.”
Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.
Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
