Today, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) announced that Iowa has been awarded $60 million in funding from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program, administered by the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is designed to help low-income individuals and families afford their utility bills during peak winter and summer temperatures.

“President Biden’s war on American energy, turning us into an energy dependent country instead of an energy independent country, has caused Iowans’ utility bills to soar. Since Biden took office, energy prices have increased 45 percent and electricity prices have increased 23 percent. Unfortunately, escalating energy prices hit low-income Iowans hardest. While the situation wouldn’t be as dire if the Biden administration would simply reverse its disastrous energy policies, the least we can do in the meantime is help Iowans stay safe and warm this winter,” Grassley said.

LIHEAP helps low-income households pay home heating and cooling bills, prevent energy shutoffs, restore services and make minor energy-related home repairs to lower utility bills. Nearly $1 million of the funding announced today comes from money appropriated for energy, power and electric grid reliability in the bipartisan infrastructure law, which Grassley supported last year.

  1. Grassley doing what politicians do – buying votes with our money. It’s not coming out of his pocket. Sen. Grassley, how about you stop sending billions of taxpayer money to Ukraine, call for negotiations and peace for a change, and stop the Biden administration from destroying our own oil and gas industry? Your precious ethanol isn’t going to heat our homes. Of course, if you warmongers get the US into a nuclear war with Russia, we won’t need any extra heat.
