It is the rip heard round the world…at least the political world.

Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House — two heartbeats away from the Presidency herself — ripped up a transcript of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech after he delivered the final words on Tuesday night.

State Sen. Jake Chapman (R-Dallas) said:

“I find it remarkable the amount of hatred displayed by Speaker Pelosi towards the accomplishments of our President. Ripping up the President’s speech isn’t a slap in the face to Donald Trump; it’s a slap in the face to the American People, our military and those recognized in tonight’s speech. Sad!”

Cody Hoefert, co-chair of the Iowa GOP said:

“Hey Speaker Pelosi, there were names of Americans who died on those papers and the name of one of the last surviving Tuskegee airmen. America deserves a better Speaker and in 2020 I’m committed to making sure we get one!”

Pelosi’s stunt is ill-advised. It comes after a lengthy impeachment hearing that seemed to not change anyone’s opinion of Trump. And it makes her look incredibly petty and childish.

All she had to do was bite the bullet and be polite for a couple of hours. Democrats are going to need any emotional edge they can get on Trump in 2020 because the facts just simply are not on their side right now.

One of their arguments will likely be attacking Trump’s behavior, words and tweets. But that would seemingly be off the table now.

Everyone is going to know about Pelosi’s petty paper tirade. It is going to be talked about for days if not weeks. And, between this episode and Don Lemon’s laughter at a guest mocking Trump supporters, the President likely has enough material for two solid 30-second ads in November.

If we’re honest, we know there’s about 45 percent of this country that won’t be persuaded to support Trump and 45 percent that won’t leave his side.

So, ask yourself, if you are one of the rare Independents in America, is Pelosi ripping up Trump’s speech going to push you toward Pelosi or toward the President?

Independents are typically nonpartisan, rational people.

No rational person, certainly no rational adult, would do what Pelosi did in front of the nation last night. It’s inexcusable.

And, unfortunately, for Pelosi and the Democrats, it will not soon be forgotten.
