In an interesting exchange during Monday night’s debate, Rep. Ashley Hinson criticized Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer for not supporting the gas tax increase in Iowa.

Hinson, a Republican, said if she were in the Iowa legislature during the gas tax debate she would have supported it.

“I supported what they did because it absolutely needed to happen at the time to make sure that our roads and bridges were properly taken care of and Iowans could drive safely on the road,” Hinson said.

Hinson said the per-mileage fee is a great model for people moving forward, but also understands concern with government knowing how many miles are being driven and where they are going. She didn’t answer if she’d support increasing the gas tax at the federal level.

Finkenauer said she’ll have anything on the table in terms of increasing the gas tax at the federal level.
