Religious Liberty in the States released its rankings for 2024 and Iowa is scored 38th out of 50. The deadline for the rankings was Dec. 31, 2023, which was before Iowa passed its Religious Freedom and Restoration Act.

According to Mark David Hall, the project director, the best thing Iowa could do is pass a robust medical conscience protection similar to the one passed by South Carolina in 2022. You can read that law here. That law would provide significantly more protection to medical professionals in Iowa.

Hall also said passing protections for wedding participation would be a good idea for Iowa as well.

Iowa’s score as of Dec. 31, 2023 was just 37 percent. It has zero of six protections for marriage and wedding protections. It lacks 16 of the 20 protections for health care provisions.

You can read about it here.
