Today, President Donald Trump signed an order to establish the 1776 Commission that will encourage educators to teach children about patriotism and American history and to honor the 250th anniversary of the Constitution.

President Trump said, “We will state the truth in full, without apology: We declare that the United States of America is the most just and exceptional Nation ever to exist on Earth.”

“Our mission is to defend the legacy of America’s founding, the virtue of America’s heroes, and the nobility of the American character. We must clear away the twisted web of lies in our schools and classrooms and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country. We want our sons and daughters to know that they are the citizens of the most exceptional nation in the history of the world,” said Trump.

The 1776 Commission will help promote national unity through renewing understanding of and commitment to America’s shared founding principles. The Constitution was the product of centuries of tradition, wisdom and experience and the Commission is a step toward countering the propaganda that is encouraging students to be ashamed of this nation.

The 1776 Commission will:

  • Produce a report regarding the core principles of America’s founding and how these principles may be understood to further the blessings of liberty and promote our continuing efforts to form a more perfect Union.
  • Offer recommendations for the federal government to promote patriotic education at federal sites – including national parks and monuments.
  • Create the “Presidential 1776 Award” to recognize student knowledge of the American founding and support the federal government’s plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

In addition to the new Commission, President Trump is ordering federal agencies to prioritize patriotic education in the delivery of federal resources. He is also taking steps to enhance compliance with laws that require America’s educational institutions that receive federal funds to observe and celebrate Constitution Day.

Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, “We are grateful that President Trump has signed this order to establish the 1776 Commission. We must never forget the foundation of godly and enduring principles that gave birth to America. The Declaration of Independence declares that the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable rights that come from our Creator. The Constitution established a limited government that requires the people to be self-governed for the system to work. Against the voices who want to re-write the Constitution and adopt a failed socialist system, we must point to the most enduring Constitution in history as a cause for celebration,” said Staver.
